Our Breakthrough in Solar Energy Technology
Our new technology provides a novel method of heating air with solar energy at a much smaller cost than any other heating process. It consists of:
- new, very efficient and inexpensive solar radiation absorbers
- many new solar air heater types, each adapted to a different application
- a new strategy of air pre-heating for fossil fuels burners
- structural integration that allows retrofitting
As our solar air heaters can deliver air of up to 110 degrees Celsius, they can:
- provide all the heat needed for low temperature applications that permit disruptions during the night or in cloudy weather
- supply part of the energy for high temperature and/or continuous applications, as they can pre-heat the air used in fossil fuel burners, so a cleaner burn would be produced with less fuel.
By adapting high temperature, old and inefficient processes to lower temperature solar heat, both fuel consumption and pollution would be reduced.
The result is the first solar thermal technology that can deliver energy at much smaller prices than fossil fuel sources and which is adapted to a multitude of uses in industry, agriculture and building heating. This is actually the first solar air heating technology that can be used in very large applications.
The Australian Commonwealth Science for Industry Research Organisation (CSIRO) has assessed our technology and confirmed its high potential. In countries that use brown coal in their power plants, the percentage of fossil fuel savings can be significantly larger because the coal can be dried with solar heat before being burnt, so as much as 20% of greenhouse gas emissions can be avoided.
The table below shows the results of a comparative study considering one of our collectors (the first row) and the best other alternative on the market (the last row). The study has been done for solar collectors of equal size that are designed to pre-heat air for a natural gas burner.
| Type of collector | Price of solar collector [$] | Efficiency [%] | Energy produced per annum [GJ/yr] | Savings generated per year [$/yr] | Payback time [years] |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ours | 110,000 | 74 | 5,402 | 52,020 | 2 |
| Other | 350,000 | 36 | 2,628 | 24,780 | 14 |
As seen, other solar collectors (the last row of the table) do not offer a viable economic solution; this is why solar air heaters were not used in industry until now.
Our new solar air heaters can be used in all climates, but a careful design has to be made so that the solar collector will be economical in all those conditions.
